What is a Private Carrier?
Private carrier refers to a company that owns the vehicles used to transport its own goods. Private carriers are not for-hire carriers and do no transport goods for other companies. Semi-trailer trucks are the most common method of transport for private carriers, but they may utilize other types of commercial vehicles to transport goods depending on the type of business and the goods being transported.
Private Carrier Insurance Coverages
There are many different types of coverage available to private carriers, but these are the most common:
Liability is mandatory and provides two different types of coverage: bodily injury and property damage. Bodily injury insurance covers injury you cause to other people while operating your commercial truck, and property damage covers any damage you cause to their property.
Physical damage insurance pays for repairs to your truck if it’s damaged in an accident whether the accident was caused by collision with another vehicle or a fallen tree branch.
Covers medical bills for you and any passengers in your truck in the event of injury due to accident. This coverage is not available in every state; your Freeway insurance advisor can help you determine if it’s available in your area and if you need it.
Freeway can help you determine which commercial vehicle insurance coverages you need as a private carrier. We’ll also determine if federal or state insurance filings are needed for truckers who transport goods across state lines.
