What is a Student Auto Insurance Discount?

A student auto insurance discount is a decrease in your car insurance rates based on some factor associated with your attendance and performance in high school or college. As a student, you probably don’t have a lot of spare cash just hanging around. But what if you could save money on your car insurance just for being a student?

The student car insurance discount is available through most major car insurance carriers. For students who meet certain criteria, this is a great way to save money each month.

The agents at Freeway Insurance are experts at finding the right amount of coverage at the best price for your needs and applying offered student discounts.

Who Qualifies for the Student Discount?

The student discount is typically available to both high school and college students. As long as you are attending school full-time; and meet the other criteria of the discount, you may qualify.

If you are a college student, it is best to learn how your institution defines a full-time college student. Most colleges and universities define full-time as taking a minimum of 12 credit hours at once, but this definition can vary from place to place.

By doing your due diligence and comparing auto insurance quotes and/or switching to the right insurance company, you can get great student discounts while shaving plenty of money off your normal monthly premium!

Are There Any Students Who Don’t Qualify for the Car Insurance Discount?

If you are attending college but not as a full-time student, you may not qualify for the discount. Additionally, students must typically maintain a certain overall GPA to receive the discount.

For example, most insurance companies require students to have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, meaning that students have an overall average of a “B” or higher. So getting a “C” or lower in a single class would not keep you from getting the discount so long as your overall average remains high and you have good grades.

Once you are in college, you may have an easier time maintaining your grades and discount by carefully planning your classes each semester. Taking several difficult classes at the same time may seriously threaten your discount!

Are There Any Discounts Related to the Good Student Discount?

In addition to the good student car discount, other related discounts or student deals may be available. For example, if you are a member of certain fraternities or sororities, this may qualify you for a special membership discount.

Keep in mind that there are discounts for memberships in a variety of other organizations, including student organizations. Therefore, even if you haven’t pledged yourself to a fraternity or sorority, you may still qualify for these special savings. Check with your insurance company.

Are Any Special Discounts Available After I Graduate College?

You can no longer get the student discount after you graduate college unless you return to school. However, you may now qualify for a special alumni discount.

You usually must be a member of your college’s alumni organization in order to receive the discount. And while it’s still good to get the discount and save on your car insurance, keep in mind that you will likely have to pay annual dues to remain part of the alumni organization.

What Other Vehicle Insurance Discounts Are Available?

You are not limited to getting only the good student discount. You may qualify for many other available car insurance discounts. By applying for multiple discounts, you can save even more money on your monthly car insurance premium.

For example, it may be worth bundling your insurance with your parent’s insurance or your partner’s insurance, if possible. Speaking of your parents, if you are leaving your car at home to attend college, they may be able to benefit from a distant student discount. If you brought your car to college but don’t drive often (perhaps due to abundant public transit), you may also qualify for a low-mileage discount.

It’s also possible to save money by taking a defensive driving course. While such courses can help anyone get a discount, it is particularly helpful for teenagers, who naturally have higher insurance premiums. It’s always a good idea to shop around for the best car insurance or find an insurance company that will do that for you. At Freeway, we do the work for you and present you with several good option for car insurance.
