What is the penalty for not having health insurance?
If you can afford health insurance but choose not to purchase it, you will face tax penalties when you submit your income tax for 2016.
The 2016 penalties for not having health insurance are $695 per person ($347.50 per child) – or 2.5% of your yearly household income, whichever is greater.
2017 penalties will be slightly higher as they are tied to the inflation rate. A substantial increase is not expected because at this time inflation is only 1.1% higher than when tax penalties were set for 2016.
Information and Documentation You Will Need to Enroll
- The number of people in your household and their birthdates
- Proof of citizenship or residency
- Social Security numbers for you and your family members
- Last year’s tax return, a pay stub, or W-2 forms – this is to determine whether you qualify for free or subsidized health insurance
