Summertime is a great time to get out and enjoy the outdoors. However, it’s also a time to pay attention to your surroundings, especially when you plan to attend crowded outdoor events like summer music festivals. You can protect yourself and your identity by following a few helpful tips.

1. Apply Sunscreen
Of course, you want to have a good time, let your hair down and live a little. Nevertheless, what you probably don’t want is to be nursing a severe sunburn after the festival is over. If you don’t want to have to reapply sunscreen every half hour or so, just look for a waterproof option that has a high SPF and long-lasting protection.

2. Don’t Overspend on Food and Drink
As we all know, summer music festivals are notorious for overcharging for everything from a bottle of water to a pile of greasy chili cheese fries. Although you may not be able to resist a little junk food, be sure to bring plenty of water and healthy snacks designed to keep your energy up and your body refreshed.

3. Don’t Drink and Drive!
Simple, right? Absolutely! When it comes to getting behind the wheel, it is never okay to do so after consuming alcohol. That doesn’t mean you can’t drink at all during the event. You just need to designate one person within your group who will commit to staying sober for the entire event or arrange for alternate transportation once the festival is over.

4. Protect Your Car
If you choose to drive your car to an outdoor event, be sure you park it in a safe location. Most summer music festivals have designated parking areas that include at least a few security guards. However, even if you park in a designated parking lot just for festival goers, do not assume that your car is safe, and never leave your car unlocked for any period during the event. Keep your keys in a safe place on your body. Many people place their car keys inside their shoe or in an interior pocket of their clothing.

5. Bring Adequate Lighting
The vast majorities of summer music festivals begin during daylight hours, continue into the wee hours of the night, and then repeat for a number of days. For that reason, it’s a good idea to bring with you a flashlight or lantern so you can easily get to and from the bathrooms safely. In addition to having plenty of light to help keep you from tripping over obstacles along the way, a good flashlight can keep you from touching something you really wish you hadn’t while you’re trying to feel your way around the portable toilets.

6. Leave the Valuables at Home
Electronics, credit cards and expensive jewelry are among the top items not to bring with you to any outdoor event, particularly when the area is packed with people who are dead set on having a good time and drinking their way through an entire summer concert series. In addition to setting yourself up for possible identity theft, bringing valuables can leave you without the things that matter to you the most.

When you go out to your long-awaited outdoor events this summer, make sure you know how to prevent identity theft. You should also ensure that you have full coverage car insurance in case a problem does arise.
