1. What is the Affordable Care Act, Obamacare and ACA?

The Affordable Care Act, also known Obamacare or the ACA, is the new health care reform law designed to help more people get affordable health coverage and receive better medical care.

2. What does Freeway have to do with my health insurance?

4. How much does it cost?

What you pay for insurance depends on your income, but Freeway Insurance’s health services are 100% free to you.

Depending on what you think you’ll earn in 2016, Freeway Insurance can tell you if you qualify for one of these:

A health insurance plan with savings

o Most applicants qualify for a premium tax credit that lowers their monthly insurance bill. You can also save on out-of-pocket costs like deductibles and copayments.

Medi-Cal and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

o For individuals and families with limited income, disabilities, or some other situations, Medi-Cal and CHIP offer free or low-cost coverage.
o Even if you don’t qualify for Medi-Cal, your children may still qualify for CHIP.

5. How do I qualify for Medi-Cal or a subsidy?

Your ability to qualify for these programs depends on your income. You must also be a U.S. citizen, a resident, or have a valid work permit.

6. How do I apply for health insurance for 2016?

You have several choices when it comes to applying for health insurance. You can enroll directly with Covered California by calling them, visiting their website, over the phone, or by filling out a paper application.

7. I’ve heard about a penalty for not having health insurance…How much is it?

If you can afford health insurance but choose not to purchase it, you’ll be required to pay a penalty – also known as a fee, or fine. For 2016, the penalty amount is either 2.5% of your household income, or $695 per adult ($347.50 per child) – whichever is higher.

8. What is the deadline for enrolling?

Below is a list of important deadlines for enrolling in insurance for 2016.

November 1, 2015
Open Enrollment starts. This is the first day you can purchase a health insurance plan for 2016 through Freeway or Covered California. Your coverage can start as soon as January 1, 2016.

December 15, 2015
Last day to enroll in or change plans for new coverage to start January 1, 2016.

January 15, 2016
Last day to enroll in or change plans for new coverage to start February 1, 2016.

January 31, 2016
2016 Open Enrollment ends. Enrollments or changes between January 16 and January 31 take effect March 1, 2016.

Please note: If you do not enroll by January 31, 2016, you can’t enroll in a health insurance plan for 2016 (and will likely pay a fine) unless you qualify for Special Enrollment.
